Planetary Retrograde Periods displays the geocentric speed of a selected planet as a lower-pane speed curve. When the speed crosses below zero, the planet is retrograde — the filled region below the zero line highlights these periods at a glance.

WHAT IS RETROGRADE?

Retrograde motion occurs when a planet appears to move backward through the zodiac from Earth's perspective. This is an optical effect caused by orbital mechanics — similar to a car appearing to move backward when you pass it on the highway. Each planet's retrograde has a distinct rhythm: Mercury retrogrades roughly three times per year, while Pluto spends nearly half the year retrograde.

FEATURES

Speed curve with per-planet coloring (8 planets: Mercury through Pluto)

Below-zero fill highlighting retrograde periods

Station markers: ℞ (retrograde station) and D (direct station) at zero crossings

Future speed projections up to 100 bars ahead

Each planet has its own customizable color for line, fill, and projection

HOW TO USE

Select a planet from the dropdown menu. The speed curve appears in a lower pane — positive values indicate forward (direct) motion, while negative values indicate retrograde motion. The filled dips below zero show retrograde periods. Station markers (℞ and D) identify when the planet begins or ends its retrograde or direct motion. Use the projection to see upcoming retrograde periods before they occur.

EPHEMERIS ENGINE

All planetary positions are calculated using truncated analytical series —VSOP87D for Mercury through Neptune and the Meeus series for Pluto. Validated against JPL DE440 via Skyfield; all bodies under 0.1 degrees RMS. (Blueprint Ephemeris is also free to use indicator)
