TrendSpider Software Update: Data Flow

Hello, traders, and welcome to another software update! In this release, we are launching a new capability to the TrendSpider platform called Data Flow. Let’s dig into the details!

What is Data Flow?

Data Flow is a tool for discovering new trading opportunities. Within the widget, you can see various events as they happen, independent of the ticker that you’re currently analyzing on your chart. You can sort these events by any column and you also can filter them, to narrow down your scope. In other words, it allows you to watch events related to any US-listed stocks or ETFs as they are reported, giving you the ability to watch the flow of information in near real-time.

There are 7 different types of Data Flow available in TrendSpider:

  • Analyst Estimates
  • Dividends
  • Earnings
  • Insider Trading
  • News
  • Splits
  • Unusual Options

Each of these is unique and contains a number of different capabilities and unique properties.  You can have multiple Data Flow widgets open at one time, and you can even have multiple widgets of the same type open at the same time.

Introducing DATA FLOW, a new trendspider feature to view alternative data for many different data types.

How does Data Flow work?

In order to add Data Flow to your chart view, simply click on the button in the top right-hand side of your platform.

You’ll first want to add the Data Flow widgets that you want to see, and then you apply your filters to them. The widgets will then watch for updates in the market, and display them in a list for you. You can then click on the symbols in the list to switch to that symbol on your chart.

Nuances and Details of the Data Flow Widgets

Each Data Flow widget has several nuances and details that you should be aware of.

Unusual Options

Unusual Options Flow displays a list of Unusual Options trades for all tickers. This data is updated once every minute. You can also see the Unusual Options activity for your current ticker by using the Unusual Options sidebar widget. The sidebar widget offers some unique visualizations which you can’t see while browsing the Unusual Options Data Flow.

News

News Flow displays all the news data we have and is also updated once per minute. You can see news data for your current ticker by using the News sidebar widget. You can also scan for tickers having particular keywords in their news.

Earnings

Earnings Flow displays all earnings events, both past and anticipated. Future earnings data won’t have any data points besides the date. Earnings data is updated once a day. You can see Earnings for your current ticker on a chart, scan for tickers using Earnings data, and even use Earnings data when strategy testing.

Dividends

Dividend Flow displays all dividends events, both past and anticipated. It has events in the future (anticipated dividends), but these don’t have any data points besides the date. We update Dividend data once a day. Please note that all the Yield values are annualized.

Splits

Splits Flow displays all split events, both past and anticipated. It has events in the future including anticipated or announced splits, but these don’t have any data points besides the date. Splits data is updated once a day.

Analyst Estimates

Analyst Estimates Flow displays all available Analyst Estimates data. It is updated once per day.

Insider trading

Insider Trading Flow displays all the transactions US insiders report as per SEC regulations. It is updated once per day as data is reported by the SEC’s Edgar system.

Sample Use Cases for Data Flow

There are many ways that a trader can utilize the Data Flow functionality, including but not limited to:

  • View all insider trading by corporate CEOs
  • View recent analyst initiations with Buy ratings
  • Show Unusual Options Sweep trades that take place on Out of the Money (OTM) calls
  • Show recent News articles that mention a government investigation of some kind

You can think of it as another form of scanning, but instead of defining specific detailed criteria to search for, you can filter a list of all activities to match your needs, or simply view it in raw form!
