TrendSpider – Interview with the developer of a fantastic app
Did you have any prior development or coding experience?
TrendSpider is a giant team effort, over 35 people work here, with almost 20 of them in dev. All the credit goes to the development team, many of them have many years of experience in both software engineering and financial markets. Their efforts make the app great. I helped direct the product, plan its initial feature set, and worked with the development team and our CTO Ruslan to help guide their efforts.
What was the most challenging aspect of developing mobile app?
Honestly, the same thing as any great software application: staying true to our convictions and vision, selectively choosing the feedback to listen to, and preventing the scope of the app from creeping too far from its initial intention. The TrendSpider Mobile app is a companion app to our web platform, it is intended to work with it to give our users access to everything they care about on their phone without any bloat.
Name a few of your favorite apps and the reason you love them.
I love apps with clean design and minimalist features designed to make life easier, not harder. Trello has a wonderful mobile app for managing task lists and todos, Superhuman is an “I can’t live without” email app for Gmail, and Slack. Those three really make my professional life better. Obviously, I use TrendSpider Mobile every day as well.
How long have you been working on this app?
More than a year on the mobile apps themselves, and four years on TrendSpider platform as a whole.
What need of the user did you have in mind when developing this app?
Giving users access to everything that matters from their phones – charts, alerts, watch lists, indicators, and more. We wanted to make it easy to access everything in one TrendSpider account when the user cannot be at their desk.
In what way do you think your app is better than similar apps on the market? Please describe in detail what innovation you think you bring and what you are proud of in your app.
I don’t want this to come off weird, but, truthfully there is no similar app to TrendSpider. Most financial market apps and charting apps focus on emulating a full desktop experience, which means doing tons of things. TrendSpider Mobile is different – we focus on a narrow list of important features and do them exceptionally well. There is no faster, easier, more functional way to access financial charts than this app – nothing even close – and we are very proud of that.
What are your future plans and expected features of the coming new versions of this app?
We intend to enhance the app significantly, and the team is already working on V2 of it. The next updates will bring more of the classic TrendSpider experience to use cell phones, including powerful features such as Scanning and creating Alerts. That said, everything we do in this app will be minimal by design, with the intent to be quick and easy without any drama, so to speak.
Assuming new users of your app are reading this page. What do you want to ask them to do (contact you about X, Share the app, etc.)?
If you are a trader or investor, be sure to signup for TrendSpider and try the web platform BEFORE the mobile app. The Mobile app is an extension of our web platform and it works very well with it. That is different than many other apps out there, and that is by design. Once you get used to it, you’ll wonder how you ever lived without it!
